Tokyo Tower

A 333 m lattice tower painted in international orange. Built in 1958, it still operates as a broadcast antenna and was the tallest structure in Japan until Tokyo Skytree opened in 2012.

Kinkaku-ji

The Golden Pavilion — a Zen Buddhist temple whose top two floors are covered in pure gold leaf, reflecting in the mirror pond Kyōko-chi. Originally a shogun's retirement villa, converted to a temple in 1408.

Osaka Castle

A reconstructed five-story tower keep on a vast stone-walled compound, originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583. The site played a pivotal role in unifying Japan in the late 16th century.

Itsukushima Shrine

Famous for its 'floating' torii gate standing in the Seto Inland Sea. The shrine complex has stood on this site since 593 CE; the current torii dates to 1875 and stands 16 m tall.
